Getting to know PTSD & C-PTSD

Most of us will experience trauma at some point in our lives. And for many of us the impact of these events lingers, making it difficult to live our lives the way we want to.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) are the names we give to the symptoms of trauma and the toll they take us, physically and emotionally. PTSD stems from a single incident, whereas C-PTSD arises from repeated long-term trauma. Both can cause you to:

  • Have persistent memories, flashbacks or nightmares.
  • Avoid anything that reminds you of the trauma.
  • Feel afraid, angry, guilty, or ashamed.
  • Become easily startled and constantly alert.
  • Have increased difficulties with sleep, concentration, and memory.
  • Feel extra irritable – like you can go from zero to a hundred in seconds.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way. You can uncover where your symptoms are coming from, build resilience, and move beyond them to live on your terms.

What can life after therapy look like?

Trauma therapy can help you explore the connection between your mind, body, and emotions so you can understand how trauma has shaped your experiences. With more insight into how it’s impacted you, you can build resilience and access coping strategies to alleviate your symptoms.

My approach is designed to help you:

  • Understand the physical impacts of trauma on your brain and body.
  • Pinpoint and reprocess distressing memories that continue to affect you.
  • Develop curiosity and compassion towards yourself to ground and anchor your nervous system.
  • Increase your sense of stability to reduce triggers.
  • Identify and challenge core beliefs that keep your trauma response active.

So, how do we treat PTSD and C-PTSD?

The gold-standard treatment for trauma, EMDR targets pivotal past experiences and uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help you process them. It’s interactive, practical, and respects your privacy by prompting the healing process physically. Basically, it rewires your brain so you can make sense of your experiences in a more positive way.

Psychodynamic

A deep dive into the impact of unmet childhood needs and how they shape your thinking, behaviour, and worldview. Through Schema therapy, you can identify and replace these patterns to build a strong sense of self and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

ACT
