What is parenting therapy?

Parenting doesn’t come with a manual. Some days it can feel like you’re running on empty. And if you’ve had a rocky past with your own caregivers, it can make things even tougher. It’s totally normal to feel lost. Parenting can throw us into feelings of uncertainty and self-doubt. Are we making the right choices? Are we meeting our child’s needs? If you’re feeling overwhelmed or burnt out by the demands of the role, you might be:

  • Battling your own emotions during your child’s tantrums.
  • Feeling distressed when your baby cries.
  • Experiencing intense self-doubt and confusion.
  • Struggling to maintain boundaries or find the right balance between nurturing and disciplining.
  • Dealing with re-emerging trauma from your own childhood.
  • Feeling disappointed or ashamed of your reactions.

We all have moments we’re not proud of. But you can find your way through these challenges, build confidence in your parenting abilities and create a nurturing environment for your child.

What can life after parenting therapy look like?

Parenting therapy can help you make sense of your life story, manage your emotions, and challenge ‘automatic’ parenting choices that stem from your past experiences. It’s designed to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself – as a person and a parent – so you can strengthen your bond with your child.

My approach is designed to help you:

  • Solve problems and find approaches to address your child’s behaviours.
  • Get to the root of the issue by uncovering the needs beneath those behaviours.
  • Equip you with evidence-based parenting info, rooted in child development and neuroscience, so you can make informed decisions.
  • Boost your emotional regulation skills, so you can stay calm under pressure (even during tantrums).

Therapies we'll draw from

The gold-standard treatment for trauma, EMDR targets pivotal past experiences and uses bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help you process them. It’s interactive, practical, and respects your privacy by prompting the healing process physically. Basically, it rewires your brain so you can make sense of your experiences in a more positive way.

The Circle
of Security

Based on John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth’s groundbreaking attachment theory, this evidence-based therapy helps you understand your child’s needs and respond in a way that meets them. It’s designed to improve the quality of your relationship with your child and improve their sense of security.

Psychodynamic
Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy explores how your past experiences shape your current thoughts and behaviours. Together, we’ll focus on identifying unconscious patterns and dynamics to help you understand yourself deeply and make lasting changes in your life.

Schema
Therapy

A deep dive into the impact of unmet childhood needs and how they shape your thinking, behaviour, and worldview. Through Schema therapy, you can identify and replace these patterns to build a strong sense of self and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

ACT
Therapy

A blend of mindfulness and behavioural therapy that teaches you to accept your thoughts and feelings without trying to control or push them away. It’s like giving yourself a permission slip to be human. Designed to help you become more present, live according to your values, and take action even when things get tough.

Compassion
Focused Therapy

With a focus on fostering empathy, this therapy is designed to help you overcome self-criticism, promote wellbeing, and improve your relationships. With techniques like visualisation and mindfulness, it helps you develop a compassionate mindset towards yourself and others.

Ego
State Therapy

Recognising that we’re complex beings, Ego State Therapy offers a roadmap for understanding different aspects of our personality (ego states). We all have unique parts that shape our thoughts, emotions, and actions. By getting to know them, we can tackle internal conflicts and unresolved issues that may be causing difficulties in our life.

Dialectical
Behaviour Therapy

DBT blends cognitive behavioural therapy with ideas from dialectical philosophy. It’s designed to help you learn new skills to improve your mindfulness, communication, relationships, and emotional control. With a comprehensive treatment approach that provides ongoing support and guidance to integrate these skills into your life.
